Bohemian Rhapsody producer compares Freddie Mercury movie to Michael biopic | Films | Entertainment

The long-delayed Michael Jackson biopic makes its cinematic debut in cinemas from Wednesday.

The King of Pop movie has received a string of largely negative reviews, earning a 32 per cent green splat on Rotten Tomatoes.

When watching the new film, fans will see similarities between it and Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

In fact, Mike Myers plays a different doubting record producer in both movies.

The comparisons stem from the fact that both were produced by Graham King, who sees the similarities himself.

Speaking with MovieWeb, King said: “I think there’s a lot of similarities in Freddie and Michael to where they both bring people together through their music. And I thought, you know, the success of Bohemian Rhapsody was bringing people together back to the movies.”

The producer remembered thinking it was possible to capture a similar “nostalgia ride” with the music and an entertaining story for Michael, as he’d done with Freddie.

King wanted to get across a certain side of “Michael being Michael” when introducing his chimp Bubbles to the Jackson family, with Joseph shaking his head. The producer added: “And these kind of moments, I think are just entertaining. So, it felt to me, after Freddie, I knew Michael in the early ’80s and the family, and it was something I just had a lot of passion to do, and then getting this guy was like, ‘Wow, wow!'”

Michael hits cinemas on Wednesday.
